The coin depicts an eagle-headed griffin, a mythical creature known from monuments of the ancient art of nomadic peoples. The image of this fantastic being is associated with ideas of strength, vigilance, and the guarding of treasures. The subject was chosen on the basis of an archaeological find from a burial mound near the village of Berel in the East Kazakhstan Region, where an object bearing the image of a griffin was discovered. The 100 ₸ coin is made of .9999 gold and weighs 1.24 g. It reflects an interest in Kazakhstan’s historical heritage and conveys motifs of ancient steppe culture through its miniature form and carefully detailed composition.
