The “Sturgeon” commemorative coin is an oval gold-plated issue from the “Flora and Fauna of Kazakhstan” series. Its design is dedicated to one of the best-known fish of the sturgeon family. The obverse features the denomination of 500 tenge, while the main composition is complemented by the mint mark of the Kazakhstan Mint and stylized images of a sturgeon, waves, and the sun. Along the oval runs the inscription “ҚАЗАҚСТАН ҰЛТТЫҚ БАНКІ”, and the fineness and metal weight are also indicated.
The reverse continues the aquatic theme: in the center are the water surface and two sturgeons, one of them highlighted with gold plating. At the top is the Latin name ACIPENSERIDAE, and at the bottom along the oval are the inscription “БЕКІРЕ” and the year of minting, 2011.
Sturgeons, or Acipenseridae, are a genus of fish of the sturgeon family. They can reach 3 meters in length and weigh up to 200 kg; such dimensions are characteristic, for example, of the Baltic sturgeon. A total of 16–18 species are known, and some of them are included in the Red Book. Seven representatives of the order of sturgeons live in Kazakhstan.
